Contactless payment limit raised to £45

The spending limit for contactless payments using your Tide card has gone up to £45. It was previously £30.

Mastercard, our card provider, increased the limit after UK Finance announced they’d be allowing this change from 1 April 2020.

Secure and safe

The increase to £45 is to allow more contactless transactions. During the coronavirus outbreak, many stores are asking customers to pay by card if possible, and to minimise contact with staff, other customers and surfaces. Because contactless payments don’t involve touching equipment or buttons, they’re safer for everyone. And they’re faster than using chip-and-pin too, so the increase will also help shops process their queues more quickly.

Contactless card payments have the same protection against fraud as chip-and-PIN payments. As an extra security measure, sometimes when you make a contactless payment, you’ll be asked to type in your PIN.
